2012 Skater Scholarship: Last Day to Apply Is May 15

The FMC Skater Scholarship program was created in 1993 to provide financial assistance to ice sports participants and recreational ice skaters who exhibit personal excellence on and off the ice. FMC has awarded over $300,000 in educational scholarships over the past 17 years, and we are currently looking for applicants for this year's scholarship. Blackjack with the B's: Boston Bruins Casino Night

The Boston Bruins are holding their annual Casino Night on Sunday, February 12, 2012 at The State Room in Boston. Enjoy a night full of various casino games, while getting to know current Bruins players, alumni and management. The event will benefit the Boston Bruins Foundation, and will include both a silent and live auction with great prizes. Accessible Ice Skating at FMC: Skating is Fun for Everyone!

This winter the Department of Conservation and Recreation will be hosting accessible ice skating events at three FMC arenas. New Year's Day Exhibition: Natick Skaters Celebrate the New Year on Ice

NATICK - FMC Ice Sports Natick skaters rang in the New Year with their annual New Year's Day Exhibition at the William L. Chase Arena. An enthusiastic audience watched thirty-five soloists showcase their skills from competitive programs to seasonal routines set to a variety of holiday music. Members of the Ice Dance Class performed a group Cha-Cha and the Magic Edge, Dazzling Edge and Cutting Edge synchronized skating teams debuted their competitive programs as they prepare for the upcoming season."We had so much fun in class working on the Cha-Cha," said Sophia Verna. "I really like skating with my friends." The Skating Club of Natick partnered with the synchronized teams to provide refreshments for the event.

ISI Benefit Holiday Ice Show: The Nutcraker Suite and More

December 21, 2011

The ISI Skating Club at Navin Arena in Marlboro, MA presented their 16th Annual Benefit Holiday Ice Show last weekend. This year's theme was 'The Nutcracker Suite' and from 'Mother Ginger's Children' to 'Wooden Soldiers on Parade', the ice was full with color, music, and great skating performances. New to the program this year was a live performance of the holiday classic, 'Silent Night' sang by Betsy Goldberg while a quartet of skaters (Madison Goodrow, Betheny Lee, MaryGrace Pier and Elizabeth Pier) presented a wonderful group number. Participants of the Benefit show were students from our Tuesday Figure Skating 101 Class and our Saturday Ice Skating Essentials class. The ISI Skating Club partnered with the arena, accepting unwrapped toys or canned goods in lieu of admission. We are pleased to announce that over 40 toys and 7 boxes of canned goods were collected and donated to Abby's Shelter for abused and/or homeless women and children in Worcester, MA. The Ice Show was a rousing success and we thank all of our generous donators for their great support throughout the year.

Bruins FUNdamentals Cross-Ice: New Learn to Play Program

Bruins FUNdamentals Cross-Ice takes the curriculum from the regular Bruins FUNdamentals program and places it in the smaller, cross-ice setting, which promotes creative development and increased participation. Bruins Stanley Cup Ring Raffle

Taunton Brewins Bantam B White District IV Champions

Locker Room: The Breakout

Continuing from our offensive observations in the last lesson, this Locker Room issue is going to focus on how to setup a simple, solid breakout. A breakout is how a team transitions to offense when they gain puck possession in their own defensive zone. If executed successfully, it can cause a quick odd-man rush or a breakaway. 1st Goal in East Boston: Porrazzo Celebrates Tradition

In keeping with the tradition of 1LT Porrazzo, the first goal in the newly renovated and dedicated Porrazzo Arena was a team goal scored by Tyler Capello of the Boston Jr Eagles. After a tough battle and a couple of cycling passes in the corner by his teammates Danny O'Connell and John Copeland, Capello ripped a wrist shot to the far side past the goalie's pad as he broke into the slot and received O'Connell's pass. The '99 AAA Elite Jr Eagles and Bay State Breakers felt privileged to be the first two teams to play on the newly renovated and dedicated rink as well as thankful to FMC and rink manager, Dave Hunt, for having such pride in ownership and American spirit by making this first goal a history piece as well as passing on the great story of Boston's own American Hero, Louis Porrazzo.

Lord Stanley in Revere

Hockey Programs Need AEDs: Local Player Raises Funds for On-Ice Safety

In 2010, a high school hockey player was saved by an AED after succumbing to cardiac arrest on the ice. This inspired local youth hockey player, Sean Burns, to found Hearts4Hockey, a charity organization dedicated to providing AEDs for high school hockey programs through corporate donations. Stanley Cup Fever in Silver City:Aleixo Arena Hosts Lord Stanley

Aleixo Arena hosted Lord Stanley last Friday during a sold out charity game between Taunton High School and Coyle-Cassidy alumni. Bruins administrator and scout Ryan Nadeau made it all possible, by bringing the Cup to Taunton on his day to celebrate Boston's 2011 championship with his hometown. Indoor Air Quality in Enclosed Ice Arenas

A recent news story featured on NBC's "Today" Show addressed a hot button issue for all rink operators throughout the country - indoor air quality. The story, while at times a bit sensationalized, addressed the exposure to carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, and other ultra-fine particulates that are byproducts of combustion-powered ice resurfacers. These emissions need to be flushed from the building regularly by ventilation equipment to prevent them from building up to levels that are dangerous to the health of skaters, spectators and the workers who spend countless hours in the arena every week. FMC Ice Sports lost a beloved member of its family this past weekend. Marion Sturdevant, long time team member at the Asiaf Arena in Brockton passed away after a brief illness. Marion was a huge part of the success of the Brockton High School Special Education program, and played key roles in both Brockton Youth Hockey and Mass Hockey District 4. FMC to Help Spread the Word About Yale Hockey Player

On Dec. 8, 2008, Yale women's hockey forward Mandi Schwartz was diagnosed with cancer (acute myeloid leukemia). She returned home to Saskatchewan for treatment. On Jan. 8, 2010 -- after five rounds of strong chemo treatment and 130 days in the hospital -- she was declared to be in remission and returned to Yale for the spring semester. She was planning to return to playing hockey in the 2010-11 season, but in April of 2010 she learned that the cancer had returned and she would need to undergo chemotherapy again. Mandi will need a stem cell transplant very soon, and a perfect genetic match for her has not been found yet. A world-wide search is underway for umbilical cord blood or bone marrow donors to save the lives of Mandi and others like her. This drive is known as "Become Mandi's Hero". Molly Schaus was invited to the William Chase Arena in Natick. The Wonderland of Ice in Bridgeport, CT, will be hosting the First Annual Pioneer Open ISI Recreational Competition on March 27 & 28. This event is open to all skaters and will include a "collegiate" grouping at every level. Collegiate skaters who are not current ISI members may join the Institute as a member of the Collegiate Conference of Recreational Ice Skating (CCRIS) for a $15 fee. The Fitchburg community is invited to help give Olympic medalist Erika Lawler a hometown welcome at 6:00 PM on Sunday, March 28, at the Wallace Civic Center at Fitchburg State College. The celebration will be followed by an open skate. Erika Lawler, born and raised in Fitchburg, played forward on the U.S. Women's Ice Hockey team that won the silver medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics last month in Vancouver. The daughter of Margaret and Kevin Lawler of Fitchburg, she attended Cushing Academy in Ashburnham and played four seasons at the University of Wisconsin. FMC Donates Nearly $6,000 to Cam Neely Foundation

The first annual Neely Sk8 Challenge concluded this past weekend, with the last event being held at the Driscoll Arena in Fall River. The month long skate-a-thon took place in 22 of FMC's locations, and $2 of every public skating admission was donated to the Neely Foundation. Nearly $6,000 was raised through the public skating sessions alone, with a total of over $87,000 raised for the first year program. All of the proceeds from the event were directed to the Tufts Medical Center's Floating Hospital for Children Cancer Center. For more on the event, please visit the Neely Sk8 website.

Matt Brown Fundraising Game Held in Natick

The William L. Chase Arena in Natick hosted a fundraiser for injured Norwood High School hockey player, Matt Brown, on Sunday, February 21, 2010. Over $12,000 was raised during the charity game to help defray Matt's medical bills. FMC thanks all of the coaches, players, and athletic directors from the Bay State Conference for organizing the event and for all of their hard work and dedication to making this event a success. The outpouring of support for the victims of last month's earthquake in Haiti was a movement of which we should all be proud. Not all ice resurfacers are "Zambonis"!

This past weekend, two successive ice resurfacers malfunctioned during the speed skating competition at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. The breakdown of the machines caused delays of over an hour and plenty of headaches for the host facility and IOC managers. Despite some erroneous reporting, this ice resurfacer was not a Zamboni machine. Cyr Arena Celebrates the Holidays on Ice

A Holiday Spectacular was in full swing on the ice of Cyr Arena in Springfield on Saturday, December 19th. In the spirit of giving, skaters who donated canned goods received discounted admission into the show. A generous amount of non-perishable food items were donated to the local food pantry of Springfield. Families, friends and neighbors were treated to cheerful delights on ice as choreographed group skates as well as talented soloists from Western Massachusetts (including members of Smead, Cyr and Greenfield rinks) entertained in costumes and skates.

2009 ALL STAR GAME - East Beats West 9-7, Ben Jenkins Captures MVP

December 17, 2009

The 2009 Southeastern Mass Jr. High All-star game provided plenty of offense, but it was goaltender who stole the show. Ben Jenkins held the fort late in the game for the East team and gave them a chance to come back from a 7-3 deficit. The East team somehow pulled off the miracle as they scored the last 6 goals of the game and went on to a thrilling, 9-7 victory. Dartmouth’s Logan Vallee and Joe Correia teamed up to score what proved to be the game-winner with just 3 minutes remaining.

Both teams traded goals in the first minute of the game, but the West team did not stop and continued to pour it on. East did not find the back of the net again in the first period and trailed 4-1 going into the second period. The game remained wide-open in the second period as both teams were able to do some damage. However, for every goal the East team scored, the West team had an answer. Three of those goals came off the stick of the ever-dangerous, Joe Peterson from Nauset. West’s other offensive leaders in this game were, Lakeville/Freetown’s duo of Jamie Truax and Derek Clancy. Heading into the second intermission, West held a comfortable 7-4 lead.

It looked as if West was going to cruise to an easy victory in this year’s edition of the All-Star game, but no one told Ben Jenkins. His dominant goaltending performance in the third period sparked his team as they went on to score 5 third period goals and skate away with a shocking, 9-7 victory. Correira led the East team in the third with a goal and two assists, while Fall River’s Chris Minkle also recorded a goal for the East team.

Earlier in the evening, both teams participated in the annual All-Star Skills competition. This year’s competition consisted of 5 different events. Awards were given for, Fastest Skater, Stickhandling, Target Shooting, Team Relay Race and Goaltender competition. The results are listed on back. I would like to thank everyone involved who made this season’s event another success, Coach Sullivan, Tony Cordeiro, Eric Palmer, George Safioleas, Tony DaSilva and especially our League Director, Kevin Palmer. Thank you all!

Thanksgiving Celebrated on Ice in Marlboro

The annual "Thanksgiving on Ice" competition was held at the Navin Arena on Saturday, November 21. There were a total of 129 skaters representing 15 skating clubs. The competition featured individual skaters and 11 teams skating in 202 events total. Skaters ranged in age from 2 to adult and competed at all levels, from Tot to Freestyle 8. Three FMC teams finished in the top 5 in the final standings (FMC Marlboro, FMC Natick, and FMC Taunton). Sharper Edge Skating School and Babson College Skating School rounded out the top five. Congratulations to all teams.

Middle School League Starts in Central Mass

Fitchburg – The 2009-2010 inaugural season of the FMC Ice sports Middle School League opened up on Saturday December 5th at the Wallace Civic Center on the campus of Fitchburg State College. In the first match up of the day Gardner took an early lead and held on to win 6 – 4 over a scrappy SMS Nashoba team. Curtiss Vachon got things started for Gardner 2 minutes into the game with a nice goal. Nico Peralta added to the lead with 5:43 remaining in the first period. Nashoba got on the board just 11 seconds later on a goal from McGillicuddy. Gardner exploded for four goals in the middle stanza, while Nashoba lit the lamp once. Gardner’s goals by #15 Wyatt Prentiss, #4 Matt Garofano, and two for #14 Gage Duteau. Nashoba goal by #31 McGillicuddy. Third period was owned by Nashoba scoring 2 goals to close the gap to 6-4. Scoring were #64 Wiselt and completing the hat trick #31 McGillicuddy. In the second contest of the day the North Middlesex team edged out the Twin City team by a score of 1-0. Both teams played well. Next games will be on Dec.19th with North Middlesex taking on Nashoba at 12:30 followed by Twin City versus Gardner at 2:00 which should produce two enjoyable games to watch.

Bruins Ice Girls visit Armstrong Arena in Plymouth

The Boston Bruins Ice Girls and promotional team were on hand at the Armstrong Arena in Plymouth on Sunday, November 22nd. Hundreds of skating enthusiasts skated with the Ice Girls and entered their names into the raffle for great Bruins merchandise and autographed memorabilia. The Ice Girls' next stop will be at the Cronin Arena in Revere, this Sunday, November 29th. Come skate with them and the Bruins mascot, Blades from 2:40-4:30 PM. Information Centers Hit Eleven FMC Rink Lobby TVs

As part of an ongoing effort to educate customers on upcoming events, current news and rink activities, FMC Ice Sports has launched new information centers in eleven arena lobbies. The screen will sroll the current arena schedule, display local weather reports, and notify rink customers of events to mark on their calendars. New Universal Access Program Piloted in Revere

On October 20, DCR's Universal Access Program piloted a new program concept at the Cronin Rink in Revere. People who use power wheelchairs got out onto the ice to help develop activities for those with severe disabilities to enjoy.The experimental activities included sliding, spinning, racing, and obstacle course challenges. The complete accessibility offered by the Cronin Rink makes serving this population possible. A fun time was had by those who came and future dates will be planned. 12 Lucky FUNdamentals Students with Have the Experience of a Lifetime at the Winter Classic

Twelve Bruins FUNdamentals students will have the experience of a lifetime as they will be part of the 2010 Bridgestone/NHL Winter Classis. These 12 students will become part of hockey history, skating on the auxiliary ice surface in the outfield of Fenway Park during the Boston Bruins-Philadelphia Flyers game on New Year s Day 2010. Participants will be chosen at random from the upcoming fall session of Hockey FUNdations, Skills & Drills and Positions & Play. FMC Ice Sports is also welcoming newcomers to the game of hockey by eliminating equipment cost, offering FREE Bauer Hockey equipment starter kits to any FUNdamentals student who signs up for three sessions of the program.

14 Free Events Scheduled Across the State OneGoal, the Boston Bruins, and Mass Hockey have teamed up to offer a FREE learn to play event for kids ages four to nine to experience hockey and learn the basics of the sport in a fun, safe environment! Newcomers will have access to free rental skates for the event in all FMC locations and will only need to bring a helmet and pair of gloves. In addition, on-ice support will be present to teach kids how to stand on skates, hold a stick and skate around. This will be a great opportunity for families to learn more about participating in youth hockey in their community. The first 30 kids to preregister at each site will get a beginner hockey stick and the Bruins will provide giveaway items on site as well so the kids can continue to enjoy hockey long after the skate! Bruins Fundamentals Initial Equipment Cost Eliminated

The weather is getting colder and times are challenging, but FMC Ice Sports wants to help you make hockey FUN for the whole family. One of the biggest detractors of getting into hockey is the initial cost and FMC is looking to eliminate that by offering free equipment for those children who sign up for three sessions of the Boston Bruins FUNdamentals Beginner Hockey School. By signing up for any three sessions, starting with Back-to-School 2009, participants will receive a Bauer Hockey Equipment Starter Kits for no additional cost. The addition of the kit which includes shoulder pads, hockey gloves, elbow pads, hockey pants, helmet and hockey bag means students will be fully equipped for no additional cost as sticks will continue to be provided by the Bruins and FMC will continue to provide free rental skates to students. Gardner Kick-Off Hailed Great Success

On Sunday September 20, 2009 the Gardner Veteran's Arena hosted its first ever "Gardner Skating Season Kickoff Day." The event was free and open to the public as a way to promote the arena and it's programs. Activities included, mascot appearances by "WALLY the Green Monster" from the Boston Red Sox and "FINZ" from the Worcester Sharks, Live music provided by DJ MATTY J, and a outdoor barbeque provided by FMC Ice Sports and the Greater Gardner Youth Hockey Organization with all donations going towards GGYH. Other activities included a 50/50 raffle for a free learn to skate lesson with Monadnock Figure Skating Club. The event was well received by the large crowd who attended as the mascots took pictures and signed autographs.

On Sunday September 13th, the first day of official on-ice work for the team, fans will have access to two Garden practice sessions beginning at 10:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., free of charge. Doors will open at 9:30 a.m. and breakfast, including breakfast sandwiches, fruit, yogurt, coffee and juice, will be served on a first-come, first-served basis. In conjunction with the open training camp sessions, Bruins fans will have the opportunity to purchase equipment used by Bruins players from past and present. Items that will be available include skates, socks, pads and helmets, among others. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Boston Bruins Foundation. The used equipment sale will begin at 8:30 a.m. for Bruins season ticket holders and 9:30 a.m. for the general public.

2009 Scholarship winners announced

Each year, FMC Ice Sports recognizes twenty-five graduating high school seniors for their tremendous achievements on the ice and in the classroom. Since 1993, FMC has awarded over $275,000 in scholarships to over three hundred high school graduates seeking to advance their education. Scholarships are awarded to ice hockey, figure skating, and recreational skating participants every year. This year's winners were selected from one of the largest and most highly qualified applicant pools in a number of years. Ice arenas are more complicated facilities than most people outside the industry would suspect. Along with the iconic ice-resurfacing machine, there is an extensive array of mechanical equipment that resides in the back rooms to produce the artificial ice surface and interior conditions that allow for ice-skating no matter what the weather is outside. It takes an ongoing investment of time and resources to maintain this equipment to ensure its reliability and operating efficiency. It also requires the right tools to get the job done and knowledge is one of the most essential tools.
