Welcome to the first step of the FMC Ice Sports group program progression. Each
Learn to Skate level is designed to teach a specific set of skills geared toward basic
movement, coordination and balance on the ice. It is important that the level
progression is followed and for skaters to demonstrate skills efficiently to staff
before advancing. Instructors will evaluate students and give progress reports to
skaters at the end of each season.

Tot Learn to Skate instructors use songs, games, toys and other fun
methods that cater to the learning styles and
development of these young skaters. 3 to 4 year olds are
separated from 5 to 6 year olds initially, but are
mainstreamed into the 5 to 6 year old curriculum after a
session or two. 6 year olds also have the option to begin
in Youth 1. Classes are 40 minutes long and include
25-30 minutes of group lesson time and 10-15 minutes
of supervised play time.
Youth Learn to Skate program delivers the basics of skating like gliding, pushing and striding in ways that 6- 12 year
olds find challenging and enjoyable. Levels are designed to teach basic motion, balance and coordination that prepare
skaters for hockey, figure skating or the occasional rink visit. Classes are 40 minutes long and consist of at least 30 minutes
or more of group instruction and 5-10 minutes of supervised practice.
The Teen/Adult Learn to Skate program is for skaters 13 years and up who
wish to learn how to skate or improve their
basic skating skills. Instructors encourage
the development of balance, coordination,
mobility and other basic skills at a
comfortable pace for each individual.
Classes will be divided by ability and/or age
if possible. Classes are 40 minutes and will
provide instruction and practice.
For skaters who have mastered the elements in Learn to Skate Tot 3 or Youth 2, Pre Hockey teaches skaters the proper
way to put equipment on and then transitions newly learned skating skills to wearing full equipment
and hockey skates. Aimed at providing a seamless transition, this program is designed to prepare
skaters adequately for the skills and drills taught in the FMC Ice Sports Bruins FUNdamentals program,
offered in Step 2: Skill Building Programs, or other learn to play programs offered by many youth
hockey organizations.
Participants are required to have the following items:
Single blade hockey skates
HECC approved helmet
HECC approved full facemask
Shin pads and hockey socks
Elbow and shoulder pads
Hockey gloves
Hockey pants
Hockey sticks and pucks will be introduced in Bruins FUNdamentals, Step 2: Skill Building, and will not be utilized in this program.
For skaters who have mastered the elements in Tot 3 or
Youth 2, Pre Skating introduces balance, coordination and
mobility and helps to build confidence in skaters as they
progress through each level. Pre Skating prepares you for
the FMC Ice Skating Essentials program offered in Step 3:
Skill Building Programs, which lays down a solid
foundation of ice skating skills.
